What is an official bank letter?

An original bank statement is signed or stamped by the bank for certification. You may also use your original monthly paper statement (does not need bank certification).  If you print your statement from online, you must have it signed or stamped by the bank.  If you need to keep your original, IIC will make a copy of the original. In this case, you must bring the bank letter into IIC.
- Must be dated within the last 3 months
- Must clearly state the student’s or sponsor’s name
- Must clearly state the currency ($USD not required)

What if I changed my status to F-1 while in the U.S. and I don’t have a F-1 Visa in my passport?

You must submit a copy of your I-539 Approval Notice with your application.

Step 2:

After your application is completed and submitted to IIC, we will review it and pre-admit you.  We will then fax the IIC Transfer Eligibility Form and a letter of acceptance to your current school for your advisor to complete and fax back to us.  After we receive the Transfer Eligibility Form from your current school, we will contact you by phone or email to determine your start date. (If you would like your original acceptance letter, please request it from the ESL Coordinator).

Step 3:

After your transfer is completed in SEVIS, you must pay the Application Fee ($110) + 10 weeks tuition ($625) for a total of $735.  All transfer students must enroll for a minimum of 10 weeks—no exceptions.  (Also, please note that your textbook is included in the Application Fee).  Again, your start date will be decided by the ESL Program Coordinator.

Step 4:

On the Friday before your start date, you will come to the Bush campus (1610 Bush St.) at 10:00am to take the placement exam, receive your textbook and have a brief meeting with our Director of Student Services.  You will also receive your new I-20. If you have read these instructions carefully and have further questions, please contact:

If you print your statement from online, you must have it signed or stamped by the bank. If you need to keep your original, IIC will make a copy of the original. In this case, you must bring the bank letter to IIC.
- Must be dated within the last 3 months
- Must clearly state the student’s or sponsor’s name
- Must clearly state the currency ($USD not required)
- Your I-20 will be issued for 1 month for every thousand ($1000.00) US dollars on your bank statement.  For example, if your bank letter states that you have twelve thousand US dollars ($12,000.00), your I-20 will be issued for 12 months. F-1 Visa applicants must apply for a minimum of 12 weeks, or more.

Step 2:

Pay the $110.00 application fee and $100.00 tuition deposit by phone with a credit card at (415) 359-9099.  The total amount charged will be $210.00.  The $100 tuition deposit will be deducted from the student’s first tuition payment (enrollment).  For example, the regular tuition cost for 4 weeks is $275 or 10 weeks for $625.  The student may choose to enroll for 4 weeks or 10 weeks and the first payment will be $175/4 weeks or $525/10 weeks.

Step 3:

After we receive payment of $210.00, your I-20 and acceptance letter will be mailed to you.  Please allow approximately 10 days for regular mail. Take these, along with your Passport and Evidence of Financial Support, to the nearest US Embassy or Consulate to apply for your F-1 Student Visa. You may also request express mailing (FedEx) for $75.00.  Please request express mailing at the time of payment.

Step 4:

Once you receive your I-20, all F-1 student visa applicants are required to pay a US$100.00 SEVIS fee (this is not the same as the visa fee). Payments can be made online at www.fmjfee.org, only after receiving the I-20 and must be paid at least 3 days before going to the US Embassy or Consulate.

F-1 Student Visa

Please note that many embassies and consulates require an in-person interview for new F-1 visa applicants. You must apply to the local U.S. consulate to schedule the visa interview.  You will be required to provide financial evidence of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses.  For the Intercultural Institute of California, sufficient funding is $1,000.00 total (tuition + living expenses) per month.  If your bank statement has $6,000.00, your I-20 will be issued for 6 months; $12,000.00 and your I-20 will be issued for 1 year.

One of the following documents (in English) is an acceptable form of financial certification:

Self Sponsor: If you are supporting yourself, you will need to submit your personal bank statement.

US Citizen or Permanent Resident Sponsors: If your sponsor is a US citizen or permanent resident they will need to complete and notarize an I-134 Affidavit of Support Form and submit a copy along with their financial documents as explained on the form. Contact us for a form if you cannot download it.

Other Sponsors: All other sponsors (non-US citizens/residents) will need to submit their bank statement along with an affidavit verifying their sponsorship. Some banks will provide an affidavit on the bank statement. If your bank does not provide this service, ask your sponsor to complete a sponsorship certificate and submit it along with a bank statement.

If you have a relative or friend who is a US citizen or permanent resident and sponsoring you, they will need to complete and notarize an I-134 Affidavit of Support Form. Contact us for a form if you cannot download it. All other sponsors will need to submit their bank statement along with a certificate verifying their sponsorship.

You must bring the following items to your visa interview:

- The signed form I-20 from the Intercultural Institute of California (enclosed). You must print, sign, and date on the top line at the bottom of the first page (#11).
- Evidence that the SEVIS I-901 fee has been paid.  You may pay this fee online with a credit card at http://www.fmjfee.com.  A receipt will be generated upon payment, which will serve as proof of payment.
- A signed passport, valid for at least six months after date of entry into the United States
- A Form DS-156, Nonimmigrant Visa Application with photo
- A Form DS-157A, Supplemental Nonimmigrant Visa Application
